IN 2017, COMETS TRACK CLUB CELEBRATING 40th SEASON

Do you remember the Comets Track Club? Did you compete during the summer in Pullman, in eastern Washington and in northern Idaho for the Comets?

The Comets Track Club is celebrating its 40th season of track & field for all ages. A regional club for the Palouse based in Pullman, it was created in Spring 1977.

Although dated -- it was written and posted in 2003 -- the Comets History (link below) might be of interest:

Registration is underway for the Comets 2017 season. More about the Comets by emailing cometstrackclub@gmail.com

Donations to Whitman County Historical Society exceeding $5,000 memorialize Ken Vogel

Donations to Whitman County Historical Society in memory of Ken Vogel, former long-time member of the board, have exceeded $5,000, according to the society’s January newsletter. Mr. Vogel, long-time Pullman clothier, died Oct. 6 last year. He and his wife, Sally, made their home at Winlock where they had built a simulated train depot next to the mainline railroad line on the west side of the state.

Vogel joined the WCHS board in 1996 and later served as treasurer and president. Sally Vogel headed efforts to restore the flower beds at the Perkins House.

One of Mr. Vogel’s last efforts on behalf of the society was to organize the 2015 Perkins House Ice Cream Social. Most of the early arrangements were made via telephone from Winlock.

The newsletter includes a thank-you note from Sally Vogel, who noted preservation of local history was one of Ken’s lifelong interests.

The society sent an appreciation plaque to Mrs. Vogel inscribed with one of Ken Vogel’s signature sayings: “The world can never have too much chocolate.”

Ken Vogel and the Winlock Historical Museum

Many knew Ken Vogel in Pullman and his involvement with various groups, including the Whitman County Historical Society. Some of us did not know Ken’s involvement with the Winlock Historical Museum after Ken and Sally moved from Pullman to Winlock (Lewis County), Wash. Here’s a story about Ken which appears in the Winter 2016 edition of the Winlock Historical Museum Newsletter.

=Music with some lyrics of “I've Been Working on the Railroad”

I've been working on the railroad
All the live-long day.
I've been working on the railroad
Just to pass the time away.

Can't you hear the whistle blowing,
Rise up so early in the morn;

Can't you hear the captain shouting,
"Dinah, blow your horn!"

Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow your horn?

Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow,
Dinah, won't you blow your horn?
